YOU-man RIGHTS

In February of this year, I have had the great privilege to meet Zoya Phan in London. I am in awe to meet someone with blistering passion about true and tangible human rights. Being born in the remote jungles of Burma and belonging to the Karen ethnic group, she is one of the countless Burmese who experienced the atrocities of the military junta. Having been able to successfully escape the "war" against her ethnic group, she now lives in the United Kingdom after she fled to the country in 2004 and sought asylum. Now, she is working tirelessly with various organizations like the Karen Community Association UK and The Phan Foundation that support and represent the Karen community. They also raise awareness about the situation in Karen State and Burma.

While Zoya has done an awful lot of work for the Karen community, much work is still yet to be accomplished for the country Burma and its political prisoners. That is why,a friend of mine and fellow One Young World Ambassador Leader, Ayah Alfawaris initiated an online petition called Stand in solidarity with Burma's political prisoners. Our target is to deliver the message of solidarity to the political leaders from Asia and Europe who will be convening this October in Brussels, Belgium for the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM).

The petition is very simple, that even Shadow Foreign Secretary and South Shields MP David Miliband has decided to stand in solidarity with one of the political prisoners Khun Bedu.

I have already signed the petition and I stand in solidarity with Khun Dee De.
